About

I have been writing about Yorkshire and country life for over ten years.

Country life is different to town in many ways.  Generally, public services are fewer and harder to access – so  people tend to band together to help each other out.

Likewise, jobs are fewer and harder to access.  Country people are more likely to have, or to have founded, their own business, hence my interest in small businesses.  The main countryside business is, of course, the most vital of them all: farming.   Without farmers, nothing else would be possible: we all must have food.

Many other people base their businesses on traditional crafts.  Some stay traditional, others adapt their craft to modern lifestyles.  Artists are inspired by the countryside, and many people enjoy visiting the countryside for leisure.

If you live in the country,  you can’t help but notice the environment, seasons, and wildlife, and want to care for them.  Everyone has different ideas on this – and they’re probably all valid, as different things work in different places.

In the countryside too, history and heritage are often more visible.  Cities have history too, but with the land frequently rebuilt upon, this history is invisible.  In the countryside, you can see the ‘lumps and bumps’ in the ground that are evidence that others once lived and worked here too.   It’s fun to try to find out more about these people.  Often, we discover that even when they lived thousands of years ago, they probably weren’t so different from ourselves.

So, I find plenty to write about, in this beautiful countryside.
